The Indian River County Volunteer Ambulance Squad is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization consisting of about 40 volunteers who provide free non-emergency transportation to doctor appointments, kidney dialysis, cancer treatments, rehabilitation and other medical appointments. The Squad was established in 1966 as an emergency transport service. In 1989, when the county established a professional emergency service, the Squad began offering free transportation for wheelchair and ambulatory patients who have no other way to get to a medical facility. Transportation is provided for non-emergency cases only. Anyone with an emergency situation should call 911.
The Volunteer Ambulance Squad operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers crisscross the county in minivans and larger vehicles with hydraulically powered wheelchair lifts to get patients to their appointments. Passengers make reservations in advance for door-to-door transportation to medical care of all kinds.
